1995 – 2022 Director of the “FESTIVAL del FILM ETNOMUSICALE” (Immagini e Suoni del Mondo). The decades-long experience of artistic direction of the festival is reported in the book “Filmare la Musica. Il documentario e l’etnomusicologia visiva” (2012).
FIELDWORKS and RESEARCH PROJECTS
2017 China: Research among Bulang in Yunnan and Miao in Guizhou (China). The fieldwork in Yunnan was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Zhang Hai (Yunnan University, China). The products of the research were the documentary film “Bulang Music. From the Mountains to the Stars” e two articles published by Asiatische Studien and Ethnomusicology Forum.
2011-16 Italy: Research and documentary project about extemporary poets (poeti in ottava rima) in Tuscany, Central Italy, conducted as an independent scholar. The products of the research have been the documentary “Cantar l’Ottava” and the article published by Ethnomusicology Forum.
2012 Nigeria/Cameroon: Research and documentary project for CNTV and CBRA Films, in collaboration with the University of Pretoria (Sudafrica) about the origin and transformation of cumbia music. The fieldwork was conducted in collaboration with Prof.Meki Nzewi (University of Pretoria, South Africa). The product of the research was the TV documentary series “Cumbia Steps” by V. Cavallo.
2011 Portugal: Research project of the University of Valladolid (Spain): “Musicas tradicionales y populares de Zamora y Miranda do Douro: Documentacion, estudio, interpretacion”. Director of the research team: Prof. Enrique Camara (Universidad de Valladolid). The results of the research has been published by the journal TRANS in the article “La dimensión visual de la práctica instrumental: perspectivas teóricas, metodológicas y experiencias “fílmicas” de investigación” (2015).
2011 Spain: Research project of the University of Valladolid (Spain) “Edicion y publicacion de materiales audiovisuales para la asignaturas Tradiciones Musicales del Mundo y Transcripcion y Analisis de la musica tradicional y popular urbana y Metodolologia de la investigacion musical”. Director of the research team: Prof. Enrique Camara (Universidad de Valladolid).
2003/2005 Indonesia: Research on shadow puppet theatre (wayang kulit), sponsored by FLOG and conducted as an independent scholar. The same year the festival Musica dei Popoli hosted the performance “Wayang Sandosa” and in 2005 the dancer I Made Djimat and the gamelan Panti Pusaka Budaya were invited to participate in the Musica dei Popoli Festival in Florence. The research results has been published in Quaderni Asiatici journal with the title “Wayang Sandosa. Una forma contemporanea del teatro delle ombre di Giava” (2003).
2002 Vietnam: Research on Traditional Water Puppet Theatre (Hanoi), sponsored by FLOG Foundation and conducted as an independent scholar. The research results has been published in Quaderni Asiatici journal with the title “Múa Rôi Nuôc. Il teatro delle marionette sull’acqua del Vietnam” (2003).
2001 Mali: Research on Traditional Music among Dogon and Tuareg ethnic groups sponsored by FLOG and conducted as an independent scholar. Following the contacts made, the Dogon mask society Awa and the Tuareg musical group Tartit were invited to Florence to participate in the Musica dei Popoli festival.
1999 Cambodia: Fieldwork focused on court dance, popular theatre, Khmer music, sponsored by FLOG Foundation and conducted as an independent scholar. The same year, the performance of the Khmer Royal Ballet of Phnom Phen (Cambodia) was staged in Florence, Lucca and Pistoia on the occasion of the Musica dei Popoli festival.
1992, 1994, 1996 Colombia: Fieldwork on Afro-Colombian music and dance, conducted as an independent scholar. In 1992 he carried out surveys in the field of ethnomusicological interest in Colombia, among the Afro-Colombian communities of the Atlantic and Pacific coast, which led to the creation of the thesis entitled “Rhythmic and polyrhythmic patterns of Afro-Colombian music“, partially published in Nero su Bianco, a magazine musicology of the S.I.S.M.A. (Italian Society for the Study of Afro-American Music). Field research carried out subsequently (1994, 1996, 1998) in Colombia led to the publication of the book-record “Cumbia. La musica afrocolombiana” (Nota, Udine, 2002).
